LPNA MEETING March 27, 2008

6:30 PMMeeting called to order by President Jen Gedaminski.

  • Annual Lincoln Memorial ½ Marathon on April 5—Jim Dahlquist described the race, the course, and asked for volunteers to man the intersections on our neighborhood.
  • Kumler Neighborhood Outreach Ministry—Sharon Brown informed us of the type of ministry that would be provided. Trinity gave the building to Kumler for a food pantry, medicine, and clothing program. Open 9-4, M-F. It is an agency of the United Methodist Church, run by member of the Kumler congregation. Donations will be accepted at that building. Walk-up program is available only for medicines, other work is done by referral. (Question posed by Micelle.)
  • Treasurer’s Report by treasurer Cathie Bryant. $1,492.00 cash on hand. The Boundary signs have been paid for.

    Members were encouraged to pay their 2008 dues
  • Neighborhood signs – Rich Huelskoetter (789-1494) Street sign toppers are to be ordered next week. Signs will be put up by the city. Approximate cost $1200.00
  • Newsletter written by Dave Ridenauer quarterly. (214-3367) Area businesses encouraged to sponsor the printing and be featured in the letter.
  • North Branch Library -- Kathy McClain from Oak Ridge Neighborhood Association (638-1562 kmcc222@sbcglobal.net) related that a movement to reinstate the North Branch has been started by their neighborhood association with the old Walgreens building on North Grand as a possible site.
  • Alderman Sam Cahnman talked about the proposed water rate increase. In order for CWLP to make the 84.3 million dollar improvements, the rates to customers will be nearly doubled. Alderman Cahnman is recommending another engineer’s study be done to re-evaluate needs. He said that many of the suggested improvements were not in the original engineer’s study. He is also recommended ways to encourage conservation with the rates.

CWLP conservation programs already in place:

Free water-saver kits available.

Monthy classes on home fuel efficiency offered.

Meeting of the Utilities Committee the following Tuesday, 6 PM.

  • Adopt a Street Clean-up, 5 th Street from Sangamon Ave to North Grand, 6 PM on April 4 (preceding the marathon) and May 2 (preceding Brinkerhoff. Volunteers needed, contact Jen (725-3228) or Jim Moser (788-1984). Meet at the Lincoln Park sign on 5 th and Sangamon.
  • LPNA Plant Sale at the Brinkerhoff fair on May 3. Donations of plants are needed. Bring to Jen’s. Volunteers are needed to man the booth. A profit of $560.00 was made last year.
  • The Dean of Students from SCI provided baseball schedules for the season, encouraged attendance at these free games.
  • Neighborhood Garage Sale scheduled for June 14.
  • Neighborhood Clean-up scheduled June 21 – Chris and Kerry Lewis (523-0946)
  • Zoning and Urban Development report by Chris and Kerry Lewis:

Volunteers are needed for an alley clean-up event in cooperation with the City.

There is free yard waste pick-up on the curb by the City through April.

Sidewalk replacement can be done sharing the cost 50/50 with the city, including driveway approaches and front curbs. Information can be found on the city’s website.

Brick sidewalks will be reset by the city at no cost to the homeowner. 789-2246

  • Social Activity Directors – J.D. (622-5919) and Janell Noseck (622-5905)

A committee to help plan a neighborhood Block party was requested. Two volunteers at the meeting: Laurel Dickerson and Jenni Dahl.

A committee is needed for the Dedication of the Bridge event. Two volunteered at the meeting: Jen and Cathie.

Lincoln Park Neighborhood t-shirts: 40 more are available at $15.00 each.

  • Neighborhood Safety & Crime Prevention committee chair post is currently vacant. Volunteers were requested.

Jen offered to help set up Neighborhood Watch programs for any areas desiring one.

  • Speaker’s Bureau, Don Hanrahan, listed Mike Stratton from the Springfield Park District as our May speaker. Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Milton may be available to speak for us September. A speaker from the Sangamon Valley Collection on researching historic homes is also recommended.
  • Guest speaker: Christy Bartolomucci, realtor with Caldwell Banker, discussed “How to Improve Home Values.” She provided information handouts and well as listing several helpful areas to be given attention:

Painting the outside of the house and buildings.

Take care in landscaping. Clean up the yard and leaves.

Alleys are big! Prospective buyers check the alley’s appearance.

Fences—take down the old ones.

Demolish vacant buildings in the neighborhood.

Help each other, especially your older neighbors.

Greenview Nursery is having a Customer Appreciation Day, May 3, offering 20% off.

  • Open discussion and questions.

Time was given for neighbors to visit with one another.

Next LPNA Board meeting will be held May 1.

Next Neighborhood Association meeting will be held May 15.
